Fragment of a court dress with gold embroidery
French, possibly by PICOT
1804-14
56 x 41cm
This piece of tulle, or netting, comes from a 'rode de cour'
and is embroidered in gold with a heavy gilt fringe. It is
reputed to have come from a court dress of the Empress
Josephine, but that is very hard to confirm. Whom ever it
was they must have been either a member of the Imperial
family or a very high ranking noble as it would have been
an extremely expensive dress to have had created.
Made of strands of 'flat' gold wire threaded through the
tulle it would have been worn over the top of a silk inner
dress. This fragment is very heavy so the complete dress
must have weighed a considerable amount. There are
remnants of yellow silk attached to the tulle which may
indicate that was the colour of the dress worn under the
tuile.
Below are two designs for Court Dresses - 'Costume
Parisien' dated 1809.
