Letter Joseph Napoleon, King of Naples 1807
Lettre Joseph Napoleon, roi de Naples 1807

Joseph Napoleon King of the Two Silicies, writing to Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès

ALS

1807

This letter to Jean-Jacques Cambacérès, Arch-Chancellor of the Empire, dated Naples 15 July 1807, is quite rare as normally Joseph's secretary would write the letter with Joseph only signing. By writing the letter personally this must have shown the esteem and friendship Joseph held towards Cambacérès.

In 1806 Napoleon made Joseph King of Naples, where he reigned until 1808, when his brother named him King of Spain. Five years later Joseph, ousted by Spanish insurgents, returned to France. In 1815, after the final defeat of Napoleon, Joseph immigrated to the U.S., remaining there until 1832. He then returned to Europe, lived briefly in England, but settled in Italy where he died in 1844.
