Pope Pius VII crowing Napoleon
1804-
19.5 x 14cm
Hand coloured engraving of the crowing of Napoleon by Pope Pius VII, as the Empress Josephine watches on. This print was probably designed prior to the coronation as in reality Napoleon took the crown from the Popes hands and crowned himself. An asterisk has also been added after the words 'Empereur des Francais' with a foot note adding Napoleon’s title of Roi d'Italie (King of Italy), which he received in May 1805 so it is likely that this is a reprint made after that date.
